About Us

Together for a sustainable future, aiming for zero waste and a brighter tomorrow.

ZeroToLandfill was started in 2022

By a group of committed residents in Mowbray and Rosebank who wanted to improve recycling solutions and contribute towards alleviating poverty. The project partnered with CORC’s urban farming initiative, becoming a pilot research hub to support the other 43 farming hubs around the country.

The ZeroToLandfill farming hub is based at St George’s Grammar School in Mowbray, with offices in a home nearby. All organic (kitchen and garden) waste is processed into compost for the farms in the south-western Cape, and used to grow vegetables which are now available for purchase through our online market.

Our recycling service is by far the most environmentally friendly and comprehensive option available in the area. Collections are made using e-bikes and include both the usual recyclable items plus e-waste (electronic and electrical equipment), batteries, light bulbs and ‘non-recyclable’ plastic which normally ends up in landfill.

Environmental impact

Through combined community efforts, the positive environmental impact we’ve made is evident.
Over the first 20 months, ZeroToLandfill collected approximately 6000 kgs of dry recycling, of which 600kg was ‘unrecyclable’ plastic, 6600 kg of food waste, 1300 bags of garden refuse, and 361 kg of e-waste.

Our Vision

A waste-free Cape Town where everyone has enough to eat.

Our Mission

A zero-waste city where all residents contribute towards reducing, reusing and recycling waste, where sustainable living becomes a lifestyle for all.
Job creation and poverty reduction through recycling and urban vegetable farming.

Our community impact

Experience the green transformation of Cape Town, one household at a time.

During the first 20 months, ZeroToLandfill employed 89 part-time workers and two full-time supervisors with an average of 48 workers at any one time. This includes recycling collectors (on e-bikes), recycling sorters, farmers, cutters (of fabric for grow bags), and sewers of grow bags.

The Zero team has produced 27,000 grow bags to date, which have been distributed to farming hubs country wide, and has a second order for a further 68,000 bags.

Our journey towards a waste-free Cape Town has started in Mowbray and Rosebank but we hope to expand to other areas soon.
